European Capital of Culture in 2011

The former capital of Finland is now the Europan Capital of Culture for 2011.

River boats on the Aurajoki offer nice place to cool after an exhausting day of table hockey. Or maybe you prefer to hit the pubs and clubs near the market square? Sightseeing? Start off with Turku Cathedral or Turku Castle.

What to do in Turku

Sports

Football: on Thursday 9th there was supposed to be a big match in football: champions against cup winners. But then the schedule was changed due, well... various issues relating to gambling, etc... So there will be no TPS-HJK on Thursday 10th, but instead FC Inter will host Haka. Then on Sunday 12th TPS will meet Haka, but likely you will be watching the open series playoffs, right? Both premier league matches are played on Veritas Stadion next to WCh venue and matches start at 18.30.

Bars and restaurants

Turku is a great summer city and people like to gather around Aurajoki river. There are multiple boats at the banks of the river which serve food and drinks and are very popular in Turku. In the city center there are all sorts of pubs, night clubs and restaurants for every taste.

Near the venue is a pub/restaurant Kultainen Hirvi (Golden Deer). Their menu can be found here.

Little further, between the venue and center, is Bremer which is a pub that also serves great food (pizzas, burgers, tortillas) and Ravintola Teini for more restaurant food.

In the center, Ravintola Harald is a restaurant with viking style enviroment and serves reindeer.

There are also several pizzerias in the city center.

After eating, it's great to go dancing on the night clubs of Turku.

Nightclub Marilyn is one of the favourites of students and young adults.
Dynamo offers indie pop, electro and rock'n'roll music.
Monk is for people loving jazz.
Forte is known for cheap drinks.

If you prefer just sitting down and enjoying a beer or two, these pubs do the job.

Brewery restaurant Koulu has their own brewed beers in a old school building. A bit expensive.
The Old Bank has the widest selection of beers in Turku.
The Castle is Irish style pub.
Whisky Bar has a wide selection of whiskeys and heavy metal.
